Research in DBC labs is focused on understanding how tissues and cells communicate with one another to build and maintain complex structures (e.g. limbs, organs, skeletal structure, etc). Understanding these processes will some day allow them to be manipulated to restore and repair damaged tissues; indeed, studies in this area to date provide the basis for coaxing stem cells to differentiate into defined tissues. Research programs of DBC labs can be grouped into a few themes that illustrate the inherent synergy between these laboratories. Each theme has significance to health and welfare today.
