UCI DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY CENTER

The UCI Developmental Biology Center (DBC) was established as the Center for Pathobiology in 1968, under the Directorship of Dr. Edward A. Steinhaus. The DBC does not control faculty positions, but instead enhances the research efforts of faculty whose appointments are in the academic departments. With the transfer of the directorship to Dr. Howard A. Schneiderman in 1969, the focus of the unit shifted to analysis of the mechanisms controlling animal development, which continues today. From 1979-2003 the DBC was directed by Dr. Peter J. Bryant who in turn passed the baton to Dr. J. Lawrence Marsh, the present director.

The unit currently consists of 33 faculty members and two Research Biologists in eight departments. Faculty are invited to become a member of the DBC when they participate in any of the successful multi-investigator activities sponsored by the DBC. Exceptions are some of the faculty associated with the Training Program in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience, whose research activities are concerned with neurophysiology rather than development, and not closely related to the overall theme of the Center.
